What would you do if you were given the opportunity to become another person - one whose life promised to be more glamorous and prosperous than your own? That was the question posed to Judith Patterson when, at age 33, she met the birth mother who had given her up for adoption as a child and who now revealed to her an extraordinary secret. Patterson, her mother told her, was the illegitimate daughter of a Texas oil mogul, one of the most powerful businessmen in the country in his day.

The news sent Patterson on a two-decade search for the truth about her identity - and part of the fortune she believed she was owed. The only problem was that someone else had gotten to it first.

Patterson's pursuit of the truth would grow into an obsessive personal quest laced with love, deception, and danger. In The Oilman's Daughter, author Evan Ratliff sets out to untangle a family drama that raises questions about the durability of identity, the slipperiness of truth, and the ways that greed can turn even the closest relatives into strangers.

The Oilman Daughter (Audible Audio Edition) Evan Ratliff The Atavist Books

This is the story about the illegitimate child of a man who would become very successful in the oil business. But primarily, it is about the machinations of her manipulative and greedy birth-family who wanted to siphon off as much money from the oilman as they could. The story is convoluted, and it was hard to keep up with the cast of characters since it involved two separate families as well as the oilman.

The Oilman Daughter (Audible Audio Edition) Evan Ratliff The Atavist Books Reviews

Being raised around the oilfield all my life the title of course caught my attention. It was a "different" story. At times it was a little hard to keep up with but I did enjoy reading it.
QUICK READ - OK STORY - WISH IT HAD HAD THE DAUGHTER MEETING THE OILMAN. MOTHER FAMILY SHOULD HAD "GOTTEN THEIRS"
The story is a bit jumbled as it is meant to be. However, there is no finish, no conclusion to it.
I found the story line very intriguing and found myself invested in the characters and what would the end bring. It is a fast read and if it wasn't non-fiction it sure read like it.
This is a wonderful short read. I thoroughly enjoyed this and wished it had been a longer book. I would recommend this to people who enjoy stories of the rich. I really wished this had been longer.
I enjoyed the story as it followed true historical events and people. I live in south LA and could relate to the places.
I was disappointed that it was so short. I would have liked it to be more of a saga. But did enjoy it.
The overview of the Oilman's Daughter states, "In The Oilman's Daughter, author Evan Ratliff sets out to untangle a family drama that raises questions about the durability of identity, the slipperiness of truth, and the ways that greed can turn even the closest relatives into strangers." I didn't get any untangling or any emotion, greed or anything else, out of the reading of this book. It reads like a report to an editor. It narrates the author's interaction with Judith and the "he said, she said" of the case but does nothing to create a sense of character or emotion. By the end I didn't care if Judith was correct or not, and I suspect she deserves better than that.
